Reflections From the NAB Show 2022

NAB Show 2022 was a massive success! Hats off to the entire NAB Show crew for putting up yet another great show. This year’s edition surpassed 900 exhibitors across three different halls and had an attendance number of 52,468 guests, with a crowd that was more focussed on getting down to business.

Here is a recap of our highlights during the wonderful week in Las Vegas.

The Pulse

Hot topics and requirements that were prevalent at the NAB Show 2022.

  • Control over streaming backends - There is a stronger calling for more control over streaming infrastructure. Companies are looking for software components and a tech stack that empower in-house development teams to develop systems on their terms while leveraging best-in-class components and technology.

  • Platform modernization - Another hot topic felt quite strongly over the past few years is modernizing existing systems. Companies are increasingly looking to move away from legacy systems to meet evolving streaming needs.

  • Ad-supported streaming - There is a strong necessity for implementing ad-based business models, especially the likes of FAST platforms. Many major players are looking at adding AVOD as an alternative to their SVOD.

  • Tech requirements springing out of company mergers - The streaming industry is filled with news of mergers. Accordingly, there was a presence of such companies looking for a means to unify the current technology setup. General interest is around microservices-driven architecture.

  • Live events - Streaming platforms are exploring all avenues of differentiation, and many are looking to add live streaming to their forte.

  • Netflix’s subscriber decline -The elephant in the room, the news from Netflix, was obviously spoken about as it was fresh off the press. The general feeling is that the development leaves more space for competition within the streaming industry, especially for new niche platforms and other big players.

The keynotes and sessions at the event revolved around the core themes of Create, Connect, Capitalize, and Intelligent Content, spanning the whole content ecosystem.

CM|IP & Future of Delivery Panel Debate 3: Show Me The Money! Monetising The Consumer In The Internet TV Age

Ralph Wagner was part of an invigorating CM | IP panel discussion on best practices for monetising the consumer in the internet TV age. He was joined by Peter Docherty (ThinkAnalytics), Leonard Fabiano (Coherent Logix), Shiv Sehgal (RSG Media), and Heidi Steffen (TitanTV, Inc). The panelists spoke about approaches to win, retain and grow a loyal subscriber base while increasing profitability. Why getting the right technology is crucial and how it allows service providers to be flexible with their monetization approaches. The panelists also touched upon opportunities in a global landscape, including the advent of FAST streaming.

Taking Control Of Streaming Backends

Ralph Wagner touched on the complexities of monolithic streaming backend systems and why they are difficult to control. He goes on to introduce how Axinom Mosaic utilizes a microservices-driven approach to simplify how companies develop and run backend systems. Ralph demonstrates how this modular solution gives control back to companies to build their systems without any added baggage. He explains how this is supported by the combined capabilities of managed and open-source services.

State of Content Protection Technology

Viktor Balujev joined Lorenzo Zanni to explore the results of a research study on content protection technologies conducted by IABM in partnership with Axinom. The session featured an analysis of current and future spending on content and content protection trends, including content protection investment drivers and pain points. Viktor also spoke of how the industry is solving the challenge of platforms/device fragmentation to improve end-user experience. He also touched on the importance of flexible content protection technologies and why lowering the barrier of entry is crucial for widespread DRM implementation.

The Road to Modular Streaming Backends

Stefanie Schuster joined Claire Plaisted for an interview on what makes Axinom’s modular solutions unique, how Axinom Mosaic provides complete control over streaming backends, and some teasers on what to expect from the company on the road ahead.

At Booth - W10506 - Connected Media | IP, the Axinom team showcased Axinom Mosaic. A unified platform comprising of managed and open-source software services that make bespoke video streaming backend development a breeze.
