Since its launch in 2007, BBC iPlayer has proven to be incredibly popular, with record-breaking programme requests in 2016 across computers, mobiles, tablets and connected TV devices.

The BBC’s iPlayer mobile app allows iOS and Android users to download and play BBC TV programmes offline without an internet-connection.

And, in 2012, the BBC launched a BBC iPlayer Radio app – bringing current BBC Radio programmes as well a vast archive of audio content to listeners in one simple-to-use app.

The BBC provides viewers and listeners offline viewing and listening capabilities using the BBC iPlayer and BBC iPlayer Radio apps.

This mandates the use of DRM technology. Axinom was charged to provide a reliable, highly scalable managed DRM service.

It should offer easy integration with the BBC’s existing infrastructure and enable the BBC to control the delivery of persistent PlayReady DRM licenses to its native iOS and Android apps.

Axinom provided the BBC with access to its cloud-based DRM service. The team at the BBC was able to integrate Axinom DRM with its existing services in short time, thanks to the simple integration model which is built upon standards based JSON Web Tokens.

This helps keeping latency low, improves user experience, and benefits data protection. Backed by 24/7/365 support, guaranteed availability of 99.99% and its true horizontal scalability model, Axinom DRM was easily able to meet requirements.
