HD PLUS GmbH, based in Unterföhring, Germany and a part of leading satellite provider SES, provides its customers with the latest television programs in superior HD quality. In 2009, the company launched its HD+ service as a linear offering to complement its existing unencrypted satellite TV programs. HD PLUS extended its offering by introducing HD+ RePlay, a video on-demand service that includes the biggest private TV channels’ media libraries – also called catch-up service.
Axinom has been chosen as partner in terms of consulting, implementing and operating the new Multi DRM solution for HD+ RePlay to extend reach and provide HD video to millions of European IDTV viewers using MPEG DASH technology.
By leveraging Axinom DRM, HD PLUS GmbH was able to set the stage for the IDTV service – one that meets the requirements of device manufacturers and content providers. HD PLUS GmbH relied on Axinom’s unparalleled skillset and customer-centric philosophy to accomplish its business goals. HD PLUS GmbH’s new offering represents an important step towards strengthening the company’s position on the video-on-demand market.
“Extending the HD+ RePlay service to IDTV devices is a very important strategic step for us. Axinom was the right partner who – due to the technological know-how – could support us extensively during the conceptualization and implementation of an optimal DRM-solution. ”
Joerg Eich, Vice President of Broadcast Services, SES Platform Services
There are three essential benefits our customers valued over years: the robustness and scalability in the cloud, and the quality of client experience on devices. We experienced a number of service providers switching over to our service in past years. The main reason is our developer-friendly API which allows them to seamlessly integrate our DRM service into their products with all the features requested by the customers, like multi-channel audio and subtitles.
The reason for that is rather simple – Axinom DRM is developed by developers who actively worked in customer projects for years. At the end you can’t beat the real life experience.
Despite all the benefits our customers frequently demanded easier management of different DRM technologies. For our customers it is important to reach the broadest possible audience with the best possible user experience. Client device platforms like TVs, PCs, tablets and smartphones in many cases work best with the respective platform’s native DRM technology. At the same time, using a non-native DRM system on client platforms often leads to subpar user experience and even may incur additional licensing costs.
Axinom DRM as a pure multi DRM service in the cloud solves this out-of-the-box. The old promise of “protect once, deliver everywhere” finally holds true. It is built from the ground up to target multiple DRM technologies in a uniform manner, enabling customers to target a wide range of platforms. Content protected with Axinom DRM can be consumed on the vast majority of consumer devices like PCs and Macs, iPads, iPhones, Android devices, Windows Phones, as well as Smart TVs, set top boxes, and game consoles.
The API is largely DRM-agnostic and designed with future extensibility in mind. This allows customers to select the best approach for each platform without requiring significant new development. The version 6 satisfies the DRM needs of many different software platforms with a single service by simultaneously supporting multiple DRM technologies such as Microsoft PlayReady, Google Widevine, and Apple FairPlay DRM. And it remains as developer-friendly as in the past.
Enabling 4K premium video content on mobile devices
Increased availability of a broader range of consumer devices, featuring different hardware and OS versions, already caused a high demand for the content protection. As the media and entertainment industry moves beyond HD, introducing 4K/UHD and higher resolutions, robust security becomes even more important, especially for premium Hollywood content.
Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to secure, user-friendly protection of content and cross-platform capabilities inherently positions Microsoft PlayReady DRM as a key enabler for the media and entertainment industry. Customers using Axinom DRM with PlayReady 3.0 support are empowered to license a wide range of 4K Hollywood premium content for a variety of consumer devices.
