Axinom Turns 25: A Quarter Century of Powering Digital Experiences

From a small team in Germany to a global software company powering streaming platforms and connected aircraft worldwide.

FÜRTH, Germany, July 31, 2026 – Axinom today marks its 25th anniversary. What began in 2001 as a small software company in Germany, driven by curiosity about wherever technology was heading next, has become a global company with subsidiaries in Germany, Estonia, Sri Lanka, and the United States, and a team of around 100 people. The technology has changed almost beyond recognition over those 25 years. The habit that started it all, solving complex challenges in the management, protection, and delivery of content and software, has not.

“When we founded Axinom, we did not set out to build a company for one specific industry. We wanted to create strong software, stay close to our customers, and keep learning as technology evolved,” says Ralph Wagner, Co-Founder and CEO of Axinom. “That mindset has taken us from enterprise content management to global streaming platforms and connected aircraft. Reaching 25 years is a proud moment – and above all, a tribute to the people, customers, and partners who have shaped Axinom.”

Trusted by Global Brands from the Start

Axinom had an appetite for new technology from the start, and it showed early. In 2003, the company shipped its first product, AxCMS.net, with early customers including Siemens, American Express, Nestlé, Staedtler, and Deutsche Telekom, and a partner ecosystem of more than 100 companies growing around it by 2009. Around the same time, Axinom became an early Microsoft Partner and an active force in Europe’s .NET developer community, going on to build and run CodeZone, Microsoft’s .NET developer-community portal, which by 2006 had grown to more than 600,000 registered developers.

The global ambition followed just as fast. Axinom opened its first office abroad, in Estonia, in 2004, international by year three. The United States subsidiary opened in 2008, and Sri Lanka joined the map in 2018.

As broadcasters moved online in the late 2000s, Axinom moved with them, taking on early broadcast and OTT clients including ARTE, Perform Group, maxdome, Sky, and ZDF. In 2009, the company launched Axinom CMS, a new-generation content management system built for modern digital media, and, the same year, its DRM offering as one of the first adopters of Microsoft PlayReady. Protecting premium content became a defining competence: Axinom went on to add multi-DRM support across PlayReady, Widevine, and FairPlay, and delivered the aviation industry’s first Hollywood studio-approved DRM service for personal devices in 2011.

First ever wireless in-flight entertainment system, 2012

Into the Air

In 2012, Axinom’s software stack powered the industry’s first-ever wireless in-flight entertainment system, Lufthansa Systems' BoardConnect, streaming to passengers' own devices at a time when the cabin was still ruled by seatback hardware and heavy integrated systems. Qantas, Condor, Virgin Australia, Aircalin, El Al, and Lufthansa were among the airlines that adopted it. Another industry first followed in 2019, when Axinom delivered the digital solution behind the first wireless seatback IFE, built by Delta Flight Products and adopted by Delta Air Lines. Firsts like these built a business that now spans the industry’s biggest names.

From the early aviation years on, Axinom worked hand in hand with the established integrators. Beginning in 2014, its software powered systems at Rave Aerospace, Thales Avionics, and Collins Aerospace. Axinom’s reach widened to the connectivity providers, starting with Inmarsat (now part of Viasat) in 2013, later adding further operators such as Gogo (now part of SES) and Hughes. Alongside these engagements, Axinom launched its own aviation products: Axinom Sync (2015) brought content synchronization to the aircraft without extra hardware, and Axinom On-Board Cloud (2019) added a platform for managing and deploying cabin, IoT, passenger, and crew services on board.

Axinom DRM delivers hundreds of millions of licenses, securing streaming at the FIFA World Cup

One Portfolio, Two Industries

By 2020, Axinom was scaling at 35,000 feet and on the ground at once. Telco OTT clients including Optus, Singtel, and Etisalat came on board from 2016. Starting in 2018, Axinom’s digital backend powered ZEE5, one of India’s largest OTT platforms, which grew to around 80 million monthly active users across 195-plus countries by the end of 2020.

That same year, Axinom Mosaic was born: a single modular product portfolio built to work across any industry, the strategic move that tied the media and aerospace stories into one. It also reinforced a partner-led approach: a media partner program in which partners such as FPT Software, Jakala, and Condat, as well as customers' own in-house teams, build streaming platforms on Axinom Mosaic, including Canela.TV, Mansa, and more recently PureFlix.

The years that followed were shaped by the pandemic. With aviation projects on hold as air travel stalled, Axinom leaned into a surging media market, and serving both industries meant that when one paused, the other kept the company moving. The result was a run of some of the company’s biggest media and entertainment wins. NBCUniversal and Sky drew on Axinom’s development and architecture expertise for Peacock and Sky NOW in 2021. In 2022, as part of a consortium led by partner Jakala, Axinom won the tender to modernize the backend of ZDF, the largest European TV broadcaster, with the new ZDFmediathek going live in 2025. In 2022, DAZN, the live-sports streaming leader, also became an Axinom DRM customer.

Across both industries, Axinom chose to help write the rules rather than just follow them, contributing to standards from MPEG-DASH for streaming to CSMIM / ARINC 853 for smart cabins, a standard for secure, system-independent messaging between software and the aircraft’s cabin devices. Beyond the standard itself, Axinom has also delivered projects in the smart cabin area for companies such as Boeing, Diehl Aerospace, and Neveon.

Axinom Stream, the industry's first studio-approved cloud streaming solution

The Next 25 Years

Today Axinom sits at the front of the most significant shift its industries have seen in a generation. In 2025, United Airlines went live with cloud-based in-flight entertainment over SpaceX’s Starlink, running on the newly launched Axinom Stream platform: the industry’s first studio-approved cloud streaming solution.

The momentum has only built from there. In 2025, Axinom achieved ISO 27001 certification. Further airlines selected Axinom Stream in 2025 and 2026: TCS World Travel and ZIPAIR, a Japan Airlines subsidiary. Axinom DRM now secures live sports at the hardest, highest scale, from live Premier League streaming to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with hundreds of millions of DRM licenses delivered. Axinom was also a 2026 Crystal Cabin Award finalist, as part of a joint contribution with United Airlines, Starlink, and Spotify. And in a year of firsts of a different kind, Axinom launched its first podcast, LOADED, and threw its first-ever party at the Aircraft Interiors Expo.

“The industries we serve will keep changing, just as they have over the past 25 years,” adds Johannes Jauch, Co-Founder and CTO of Axinom. “Our opportunity is to stay open-minded and flexible, to listen to what our customers and partners actually need, and to give them the freedom to build what comes next on our products. We are entering our next chapter with the same curiosity and determination that started Axinom in 2001.”

Much of the team that built Axinom is still building it, its co-founders among the leadership and many colleagues on board since the early 2000s, working alongside a new generation that keeps bringing fresh impulses and ideas. Twenty-five years in, artificial intelligence is reshaping what software can do, the platforms are in the cloud, and some of them are moving at 35,000 feet. The software shaping those experiences still comes from a company that started with a small team and the curiosity to chase whatever technology comes next.

About Axinom

Axinom provides software products that connect cloud and cabin, enabling use cases from in-flight entertainment and on-board commerce to IoT, fleet management, and crew applications. Leading airlines, connectivity providers, and airframers, including United Airlines, ZIPAIR, and Boeing, rely on Axinom software to shape their cabin services, independent of hardware and connectivity choices.

The company has been at the forefront of innovation in the aviation industry, building a series of firsts: the first Hollywood studio-approved DRM for personal devices (2011), the first wireless in-flight entertainment deployment (2012), the first wireless seatback system (2019), the first containerized edge node for on-board software (2021), and the first cloud-only in-flight entertainment rollout (2025).

The same platform serves the media and entertainment industry, where companies such as ZDF, DAZN, and Singtel build on Axinom software to reach millions of viewers worldwide.

Founded in 2001 in Fürth, Germany, Axinom employs around 100 people with offices in Europe, Asia, and North America.
